12 millionth Domain Name Registration for .DE

The twelve millionth .de domain name was registered on April 14 DENIC have announced. DENIC is the first ccTLD to reach this landmark, although China’s ccTLD, .cn, is closing rapidly having reached its ten millionth registration earlier this year.”This success is mainly due to the excellent work of our members, who offer attractive services to the domain holders and a favourable price-performance ratio that has made .de domains a quality product for everybody in Germany,” says Sabine Dolderer, member of DENIC’s Executive Board. “For DENIC, the twelve million domains are a commitment to offer the domain holders and the Internet Community the best possible service through stable and secure operation.”The .de ccTLD is increasing by around one million registrations per year compared to .cn who manages to achieve this every two months. So it would be reasonable to assume that by the end of 2008 .de will have lost its crown of being the largest ccTLD.Of the .de registrations, 400,000 of these are Internationalised Domain Names, that is, they contain umlauts or characters with accents.DENIC have published a news release on the achievement at www.denic.de/en/denic/presse/press_89.html.
