A flurry of ccTLDs passing the magical one million mark hasnât stopped IEDR marking the passing of the 100,000 mark in the emerald isle last week.
While the 100,000 mark is not an overly huge mark for most ccTLDs, for .ie it is quite significant due to the registration rules IEDR has in place.
For the lucky domain name that passed the 100,000 mark, royal-hospital-kilmainham.ie, they were given free domain registration for the next 100 years in a presentation by Minister Eamon Ryan, TD, and Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

There are some advantages with the restrictions. IEDR points out they have been ranked the second safest ccTLD in the world by the 2007 McAfee Site Advisor Report. It is also much easier to get the domain name of choice for Irish businesses, and as of October year, individuals when there were 3,900 domain name registrations for the month. There was also a reduction in the price of a .ie domain name in January 2008.
So far this year there has been an average of 3,000 domain names registered each month.
