The world's largest web hosting provider and domain name registrar Go Daddy found its web hosting services down and email not going through Monday afternoon after an apparent failure of the company's Domain Name Service servers, possibly due to a hacker attack.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 5th ICA attended a meeting on rights protection mechanisms (RPMs) for new gTLDs held at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington. About 40 persons attended in person, with another half dozen connected by phone, and almost all of them were from law firms, trade associations, corporations, and consultancies representing major brand interests. ICA was the only party in the room with a registrant-centric perspective and, while we understand brand owners' concerns regarding the prospective costs of defensive registrations and the cybersquatting potential associated with 1410 unique new gTLDs, we also want to assure that registrant due process rights don't get trampled as those concerns are addressed.

Go Daddy Auctions And Sedo Show Dips In Domain Sales
In August Go Daddy Auctions sold 31,481 domain names compared to 33,373 in July, a drop of 1892 for the month. The drop in sales is also reflected in quarterly sales figures with 103,831 domain names sold in the quarter ending 30 June (quarter two) compared to 126,966 in the quarter ending 31 March (quarter one), a drop of 23,135.

ICANN announced this week it will be holding its second meeting for 2013, and 47th all told, in Durban, South Africa. It will be the second time the organisation has held a meeting in South Africa, with Cape Town being the venue for the 21st meeting in December 2004.

Legal Information Provider Misleads On Rising Domain Disputes Story
Never let facts get in the way of a good story. Sweet & Maxwell have gone on the warpath against cybersquatters saying that disputes over cybersquatting are at record numbers. They use the figures put out by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, claiming that WIPO "decided on nearly 3,000 cases in the 12 months to July 2012, the highest figure since 2007," according to a report in The Guardian.

ICANN Extends New gTLD Application Comment Period by 45 Days
ICANN announced Friday they extended the public comment period for new generic top level domains applications for an additional 45 days. The new end date is 26 September 2012.
