[IDG] Facebook won a US$873 million (AUD$1.3 billion) judgment in a case against a spammer in one of the largest awards yet for a suit filed under the CAN-SPAM Act.
The suit charged Adam Guerbuez, Atlantis Blue Capital and 25 other unnamed people for falsely obtaining login information for Facebook users and then sending spam to those users' friends.

Facebook has won an $873 million judgment against a Canadian man who bombarded the popular online social networking site with sexually explicit "spam" messages.
The victory, sealed with a judge's order issued last Friday, probably will not yield a windfall for the privately held Facebook, whose revenue this year is expected to range between $250 million to $300 million.
Facebook awarded $873 million in spam case
Facebook has been awarded $873 million in damages against a Canadian man accused of sending spam messages to its members.
The default judgment was issued in federal court in San Jose, Calif., on Friday against Adam Guerbuez, of Montreal, and his company, Atlantis Blue Capital. The ruling also forbids Guerbuez from using Facebook or interacting with its members ever again.
Facebook Wins $873 Million Judgment Against Spammer
Facebook on Friday won $873 million in damages from a spammer, the largest award to date under the 2003 Can-Spam Act.
The penalty for illegal spamming appears to be rising. Facebook's award tops the $234 million judgment won by MySpace in May against Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines. It also exceeds the $177,500 fine and $1.1 million ill-gotten-gain forfeiture that Jeffrey Kilbride and James Schaffer were ordered to pay in October 2007 for the pair's porn spam operation.
Facebook Spammer Dinged for $873 Million
A federal court has awarded Facebook more than $873 million in damages against a spammer for showering the site's members with unsolicited advertisements that pushed sexually oriented products.
Judge Jeremy Fogel, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, awarded statutory damages of more than $436.6 million against Adam Guerbuez and his company, Atlantis Blue Capital, and an equal sum in aggravated statutory damages.
Facebook spammer fined almost $1 billion under CAN-SPAM
Facebook has won a judgment of nearly a billion dollars -- $873,277,200, to be exact -- against a spammer who used the social networking service to illegally advertise his wares. California judge Jeremy Fogel ruled late last week that Adam Guerbuez was guilty of violating the 2003 CAN-SPAM Act, and that he should be required to pay statutory damages, aggravated statutory damages, and attorneys' fees to Facebook by mid-December. Even Facebook's lawyers don't believe they will be able to collect, however.
