The Government Cut Their Internet. Will Abuses Now Remain Hidden?

With ethnic conflict spreading in Rakhine State in Myanmar, a government-led online shutdown could hide human rights abuses and leave vulnerable populations in the dark.

The security forces, with their geriatric rifles, formed a wary patrol, scanning the forested hills where members of an ethnic insurgency roam. A crater on the pitted road attested to the rebels’ skill at fashioning explosive devices.

Rakhine State, a ribbon of marsh and mountain on the western coast of Myanmar, is isolated in the best of times, racked by guerrilla warfare and ethnic cleansing that takes place far from international scrutiny.
