Mary Meeker just delivered her highly anticipated annual “Internet Trends” presentation on the state of the Web.

The longtime Kleiner Perkins general partner, who launched a new firm called Bond Capital earlier this year, ran through the 333-page report during a rapid-fire, 30-minute presentation Tuesday morning at the Code Conference in Arizona.

Big themes highlighted this year include the rise of freemium subscription business models, encrypted messaging apps, interactive gaming, telemedicine and accelerating digital ad spend.

Meeker, once dubbed by Barron’s as Queen of the Net, releases an annual report that I’ve been enjoying for at least the last three or four years. She highlights digital trends and has tons of useful infographics.

The funny thing is it’s no longer about Western apps anymore. Chinese apps are the ones that are innovating and showing the future of what young people are into.

Mary Meeker’s 2019 Internet Trends report highlights China’s short-form videos and super apps
This year’s edition of Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends report, released earlier today, once again included a section on China prepared by Hillhouse Capital. There are now 3.8 billion Internet users globally, more than half of the world’s population, but growth is slowing (as demonstrated by declining smartphone shipments). Internet leaders in China can continue helping companies in other countries find ways to engage their users, the way WeChat launched features, including mini-programs and e-commerce, that are now ubiquitous in messaging and social media apps around the world.

China has the most internet users in the world, about 800,000,000 or 21% of the world’s total internet users (it is followed by India, the United States and Indonesia). Chinese companies took seven of the top 30 spots for internet market cap leaders: Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan Dianping,, Baidu, NetEase and Xiaomi—stable, just one less than one year.

Meeker first crafted a report of this kind, which underlines the most important statistics and technology trends on the internet, in 1995.

This morning, Meeker highlighted slowed growth in e-commerce sales, increased internet ad spending, data growth, as well as the rise of freemium subscription business models, telemedicine, photo-sharing, interactive gaming, the on-demand economy and more.
