Australian world-first system of fire alerts to pick up location of phones

A world-first system to send emergency warnings to mobile phones will be rolled out across Australia in time for next summer.

The Victorian government signed a contract with Telstra late last month to deliver the location-based emergency mobile service to its network by November, and is in discussions with the other two major carriers, Optus and Vodafone.
