FBI takes over for Microsoft in spam-network takedown

In March, Microsoft filed suit and used the court system to take down the giant Rustock email-spamming network, employing U.S. Marshals to help seize hard drives and servers at Internet service providers in seven U.S. cities including Seattle. That disconnected most of the IP addresses that controlled the "botnet," largely shutting it down, and the servers were removed as evidence to be analyzed by Microsoft.
Now Microsoft is passing the torch to the FBI, which will take over the case as a criminal investigation.
