EU Seeks Tougher Online Code in Bid to Safeguard Private Data

The European Union on Thursday proposed new privacy rights for citizens sharing personal data with websites such as Facebook and Google -- threatening to heighten tensions between European regulators on the one hand and U.S. tech companies and a fast-growing online advertising industry on the other.
Both Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. have come under fire in the EU this year for collecting personal data without authorization.
